Naked Yoga | Cultivating Warmth

Welcome to Broz Fitness, Welcome to Today’s Naked Yoga. As always, our goal is never just to create videos but to inform and motivate you. You can see more of our Livestream and the Latest Uploads at the Broz Fitness YouTube Channel. You can also check out our latest Gear Reviews.

Class Breakdown:

It’s been really cold in Denver and for today’s class, I designed asana trying to move through movements which warm up the body. Moreover, we’ll move through asana and pranayama intended to cultivate a sense of familiarity. I build on movements that we have been working on throughout the last few weeks in a manner that seems different than usual. For example, we choose different variations of cat and cow in different positions. We then go on to move through several movements of standing splits, targeting the thighs more than we typically do. Because we’ve been doing so much practice with standing splits, it felt almost natural when we moved into Warriors 3.

Trainer’s Notes:

Please talk to your doctor about whether you are healthy enough to begin physical activity before you do so. You assume all risk in beginning and performing various exercise movements.

As I was designing today’s class, I was reading this fantastic book, Glute Lab, about glutei training by Bret Contreras and I was working on trying to incorporate more movements from Contreras which reinforce glutei movements we do in our weight training. I must admit, I was pretty sore during today’s yoga and you can see it every time I bend over. Because of this limitation, the class moved a little slower than usual. Perhaps it was also the cold trying to slow down the practice and keep us on our toes.

The Gear:

As we’ve been doing in the previous classes, I’ve been trying to add in different components of self-affirmation as well as helpful tips and new cues. This has been of greater importance because my students have been discussing some of the judgments we place on ourselves while we’re in practice. In the last few sequences, we have worked on saying “I am enough, I am divine.” This is because I want to make sure everyone who is listening knows, and can say allowed, that they are enough. As my teacher, Michelle Young, instilled in me: we are all divine beings living in this experience.

Today’s Class:

It’s becoming a little overwhelming to think that we’ve made it to nineteen episodes. We’ve been working to add on new and interesting components to our Naked Yoga classes including adding in new transitions, more interesting tips, and title pages. They seem to make everything look a little more fun overall and it’s been a lot of fun working with these sorts of creation elements. In fitness, everything seems so boring sometimes. It’s repetitions, reading research, keeping up-to-date on the latest tech, but it’s also making sure that we add in fun elements that are not hostile to anyone’s body.

Gentle Yoga Vinyasa | Shoulders and More Shoulders

Welcome to Broz Fitness, Welcome to Today’s Gentle Yoga.

Trainer’s Notes:

Please talk to your doctor about whether you are healthy enough to begin physical activity before you do so. You assume all risk in beginning and performing various exercise movements.

If you already have a shoulder injury, this sequence and anything else that I currently provided is not made for you. If you are injured, Broz Fitness strongly encourages you to talk with a doctor or a physical therapist to determine movements would be good for your body. Thereafter, you can find a local personal trainer to help implement that plan.

Today’s Notes:

In today’s gentle yoga class, Alan moves the class through yoga sequence intending to target primarily the shoulders. We spent a lot of time on the ground can we move through various lunges and grounding sequences that specifically focus on the shoulders.

Yesterday’s class was a little bit intense not necessarily because of this class which follows a Yin Yoga teaching style. One of the primary focuses of Yin yoga is to strengthen the muscles and ligaments by creating deep stretches and holding those stretches for a long period of time. So yesterday when I taught Naked Yoga immediately after this Yin Yoga-style class, it was almost as if I was immediately counteracting everything that I had already done and I was a little bit to loose to teach naked yoga in an ashtanga style. If you happen to have the opportunity I would highly suggest not doing two consecutive hours of two different styles of yoga.

Today’s Class:

We don’t spend very much time reaching toward more complicated movements such as Half-Moon Pose or Warrior 3, instead, we move slowly through fewer poses. Today’s 4k Version should be up a little bit later this week as we are attempting to work with a new video editing software. You’ll see how this goes soon enough.

Naked Yoga: Cultivating Confidence

Welcome to Broz Fitness; Welcome to Naked Yoga, Episode 17. You can see more at the Broz Fitness YouTube channel.

Trainer’s Notes:

PLEASE NOTE: Talk with your doctor to ensure you’re healthy enough before you begin physical activity.

In today’s yoga practice we moved through subtle movements incorporating a block or two blocks. By bringing the floor to us we were able to find a easier movement to incorporate more bodies. I’ve been a little caught up with yoga teacher training to finish out my 500 hour certification. However, I seek to incorporate the things that I’ve been learning to help make my Naked Yoga practices more body positive. As I work on my chair yoga, I work to make those more available for individuals who would like to remain in a chair or alternatively bed yoga to ensure that anybody who wants to remain in bed can do so while they do their yoga.

I have also been trying to find moments to bring awareness to the throat chakra. By finding alternative moments to engage in a different sort of pranayama such as in the middle of a flow or through an opportunity to grab some coffee, I think that we are able to bring more openness to the heart and the throat chakra.

In today’s practice I primarily used a Manduka cork blocks. I have not yet tried or seen anybody using foam blocks. However because I am a little bit of a larger guy, I feel a little bit more supported by the cork blocks in a way that allows me some resistance that I don’t feel when I use bamboo yoga blocks. I would also add that by using these blocks we can create space that we wouldn’t otherwise have. For example, if you have a larger chest it’s probably much harder to move through cobra and upward facing dog than it would for somebody who has a smaller chest.

13-Minute Workout, Day 3: Legs and Biceps

Welcome to Broz Fitness; Welcome to Naked Yoga. You can see more at the Broz Fitness YouTube channel.

In today’s workout, we join Alan for a 13-minute Dumbbell workout incorporating functional movements that we typically see in our everyday life.

GIF of Alan demonstrating various movements from today’s class.

Trainer’s Notes

PLEASE NOTE: Make sure you talk to your doctor before you engage in physical activity. If you’ve never previously done a superset workout, I very highly suggest you break this down. You should also make sure you’ve completed the previous class.

Today was a little bit heavy. I used a pair of 25 pound dumbbells, 8 pound dumbbells, and 5 pound dumbbells. Each of these dumbbells serves a different purpose. A superset is a lifting methodology where you immediately follow-up one exercise with another exercise targeting that same muscle group. Some studies have shown that this methodology increases hypertrophy, which corresponds to increased muscle mass growth compared to doing the same movements with a break between each set. I use the lower weight dumbbells to complete the supersets and the object rotations.

Bear Basics Yoga: 25-Minute Glutei Conditioning 1

I joke that I would like to leave the legendary children a series of videos from which anyone can gain a sense of conditioning. In that tradition, today we’re moving through a 25-minute sequence intended to cultivate a sense of conditioning.

This short practices featuring asana which incorporates movements intended to target the glutei. By incorporating subtle movements like chair pose and an extended set of bridge repetitions, I designed this asana to be repeated as many times as you’d like to target the glutei region. Make sure you do not over do it though, find balance by doing other practices or following along at the Broz Fitness YouTube Channel.

We get a little heavy in today’s workout with more weight and more active movements. I tried to design this one around incorporating functional movements, those movements you make in everyday life. I also incorporate yoga to target the legs even though we are working through chest and triceps. By incorporating movement targeting the legs immediately after we work the upper body, we can promote increased blood flow.

Beginner Naked Yoga: Quads, Shoulders, Hips

Welcome to Broz Fitness; Welcome to Naked Yoga.

In today’s yoga will move through asana and pranayama intended to cultivate a sense of beginning. No matter how we attempt to put the camera it seems that there’s still a struggle and will work on it for the next few posts.

Last class we had the very unfortunate circumstance where I forgot to record another version of the class. However, you can see it here you can see it here.

Now you may ask, what have we learned after 15 episodes of naked yoga. Well, technology matters. As an initial starting point, we had to invest in new camera equipment. This is been an interesting Learning curve Most especially because I don’t get to know if it worked until after the livestream. You can of course see those here.

Moreover now that we have 16 episodes (!!!!!) it’s time to start putting them together in a sequence that you can do over a course for a few days. Obviously when I was designing these it definitely wasn’t my plan that it would be a continuous series, however over the course of a few days you can start to see how each of these sequences blends together. I think the body results have been awesome to see too. Not too often does one get the chance to watch themselves over 16 episodes and how our little practice has grown. Stay tuned, we’re also filming extra episodes for November; we also change underwear and we also start to get into shorter sequences.

Three-Part Chest Superset

In today’s superset chest workout, Alan works through a three different pieces of a superset. You can see more at the Broz Fitness YouTube Channel.

I wrote today’s workout to target the upper chest and the triceps. I frequently group the upper chest and the triceps as a part of my lifting week. Although I do this workout using a barbell and bumper plates which you can follow along to at the gym, you can also use dumbbells appropriate to your strength when you’re sitting there playing video games.

This workout also includes a cable machine. You can find those at your local gym or you can look up a variation for tricep kickbacks using dumbbells and lat raises with dumbbells. Make sure that you’re using the proper amount of weight.

Restorative Yoga: Root Chakra Sequence 5

Welcome to Broz Fitness; Welcome to Restorative Yoga.

Tonight we ran through a more complex yin yoga sequence before we began restorative yoga so that we could get some movement in the stiffer parts of our body prior to encouraging it to relax.

I wanted to make sure that we felt into our warriors. As my thigh had been feeling a little stiff from Naked Yoga earlier, energizing the body slightly before restorative practice left me feeling way less ready to fall asleep on my mat during Restorative Yoga tonight.

When we got down to it, in Restorative Yoga, I wanted to keep the “sit-bones” grounded as we went through the remainder of the practice. We transition through two poses, one where we initially begin with the bolster forward. I wasn’t so much feeling that pose as we were doing it, so I backed us out of it and we came into the alternative with our forehead planted on the top of the Yoga Bolster.
